Ontario

Ontario is bounded by Quebec to the East, Manitoba to the West, Hudson Bay and James Bay to the north, and the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes to the south. The second largest province in Canada, it covers more than one million square kilometers (1,076,395 km²), an area larger than France and Spain combined. It is the first province with a population of 14,566,547 (2019). Its Prime minister is Doug Ford and its Lieutenant Governor is Elizabeth Dowdeswell. The official language is English with a minority of French speakers, but it is the largest enclave outside Quebec.

Ontario's climate is continental, with wet weather in the south, where winters are cold and summers are warm, while the north experiences subarctic temperatures. Due to the size of the province, temperatures can vary widely from region to region.

Before the arrival of European settlers, Algonquin and Iroquois-speaking Aboriginal people had settled on the land. Beginning in the 1600s, French and British settlers arrived in Canada and began working the land. After the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), most of Canada's land was owned by the British, who named the area the Province of Quebec, a territory that included Quebec, Ontario and part of the United States. In 1791, the British enacted the Constitutional Act, dividing Quebec into two parts. Since Ontario was up the St. Lawrence River, it became Upper Canada; Quebec was called Lower Canada. Throughout the 19th century, many groups of immigrants, including Germans, Scots and Mennonites, came to Upper Canada. In 1867, Ontario and Quebec became separate provinces, and on July 1, 1867 Ontario joined the Canadian Confederation.

The main industry in the province is manufacturing in various sectors such as automotive, food, chemicals and paper. After California and Texas, Ontario has the largest number of manufacturing employees of any Canadian and U.S. jurisdiction. Both agriculture and the high-tech industry are important players.
