Manitoba

Manitoba is a province in Western Canada, located in the prairie region, bordered by Saskatchewan to the west, Ontario to the east, Nunavut to the north, and the U.S. states of Minnesota and North Dakota to the south. Winnipeg is its capital and largest city. With a population of 1,278,365, Manitoba is the 5th most populous province in Canada and the 8th largest in the Federation with 647,797 km². Its Prime minister is Brian Pallister and its Lieutenant-Governor is Janice Filmon. The official language is English.

Manitoba has a continental climate with harsh winters and warm summers. With one 110 thousand lakes, Manitoba is home to a large number of fish species and attracts many fishermen. It is also known for its large polar bear population; the town of Churchill is better known as the "Polar Bear Capital".

Before the arrival of Europeans, Aboriginal people in Manitoba lived mainly from hunting (moose, caribou, bear and beaver) and some fishing. European exploration of Manitoba began in the coldest and most remote region: the shores of Hudson Bay. In 1670, during the reign of Charles II of England, a huge territory was created to develop fur trade: the Hudson's Bay Company, better known as Rupert's Land. The natives became dependent on this trade and gradually lost their customs and were also decimated by the diseases brought by the Europeans. After several unsuccessful negotiations, natives gradually lose their lands to the Europeans coming in successive waves. Today, there are still 307 reserves in Manitoba and 7 First Nations (Aboriginal) communities. Manitoba entered the Canadian Confederation on July 15, 1970.

Up to 1875, fur trade was the main sector of activity. Today, oil production has become one of the main resources of the province. Agriculture also plays an important role although its contribution to the provincial GDP varies greatly from year to year due to factors such as crops and price fluctuations.
