Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick by the Northumberland Strait, where since 1997 the Confederation Bridge (12.9 km) connects the island to New Brunswick. In the shape of a half-moon, the island is 224 kilometers long and its width varies between 6 and 64 kilometers. It is the smallest province of Canada, both geographically (5,660 km²) and demographically with 159,625 inhabitants (2020). The spoken language is English. Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown. Its prime minister is Dennis King and its lieutenant governor Antoinette Perry.

Prince Edward Island's climate is humid continental, meaning that there is a large difference in temperature between the cold and warm months. During the winter, the temperature can drop as low as -28°C. Prince Edward Island has a wide variety of wildlife including beavers, muskrats, American mink, red foxes, squirrels, snowshoe hares, striped skunks and coyotes. The territory is also rich in marine species.

The Micmacs settled Prince Edward Island some two thousand years before the Europeans. When Jacques Cartier recognized the coasts in 1534, the island was inhabited by a few hundred Mimac Amerindians. In 1603, Samuel de Champlain claimed the island in the name of France and named it Île Saint-Jean. In 1758, after the fall of Louisbourg to the English, the island became British and took its present name in honor of the son of King George III of England. It joined the confederation on July 1st, 1873.

Prince Edward Island's economy is based on tourism, construction, natural resource processing and services. One of the Island's most iconic attractions is the "Green Gables House" which became famous thanks to Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery who wrote the famous novel "Anne of Green Gables". The author was inspired by a house on the island that is still visited nowadays.
