Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador is the easternmost province of Canada, and is one of the four Atlantic provinces. The province consists of the island of Newfoundland, as well as Labrador, which is located on the mainland bordering Quebec. It has a population of 525,000 (in 2020) making it the 9th province in population and the 10th in area with its 405,212 km². Its capital and largest city is Saint John. Its Prime Minister is Andrew Furey and its Lieutenant-Governor is Judy Foote. The spoken language is English. The province is known to be one of the safest and most welcoming places in the world to live and work.

The province's climate is notable for its significant seasonal fluctuations and instability, making it very difficult to predict coherent weather. The geographic area is characterized by substantial seasonal variations in solar energy input and dominant westerly winds.

The first inhabitants of the island were the Inuit and the Beothuk. The first European colony in America, founded in the year 1000 by the Vikings, was located on the island, at L'Anse aux Meadows and Pointe Rosée. The explorer John Cabot landed at Bonavista in 1497 and took claim to Newfoundland in the name of the Crown of England. In 1610, John Guy founded a colony at Cuper's Cove, now known as Cupids, making Newfoundland the second permanent English colony in America after Jamestown, Virginia. Newfoundland and Labrador was the last province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 31, 1949.

Newfoundland and Labrador's economy has been growing at a rapid pace in recent years, driven by developments in marine oil sector, mining projects such as Voisey's Bay, and tourism.
