The British Columbia
British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada; it is bounded to the north by Yukon and the Northwest Territories, to the east by the province of Alberta, to the south by the U.S. states of Montana, Idaho, and Washington, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean and the southern panhandle region of the U.S. state of Alaska. With a population of 4,648,055, it is the third largest province and the fifth largest in terms of area (944,735 km²). The spoken language is English. Its capital is Victoria but its largest city is Vancouver. Its prime minister is John Horgan and its Lieutenant Gouvernor is Janet Austin.
Because of the Kuroshio, or Japan Current, which warms the coast, and the adjoining mountain ranges, British Columbia experiences a variety of climates: Northern regions have cold, snowy winters. The southern region of Vancouver Island enjoys a temperate, moderate climate. Inland, summer temperatures can be quite warm, as there are several semi-arid regions in the province. British Columbia reforested its forests in 1980 allowing the bear population to increase steadily, but it is also home to marmots, squirrels and grizzly bears.
The first Europeans arrived in the XVIII century, when British Columbia was populated by various North American Indian tribes. The territory became the colony of British Columbia in 1858 following the merger of several colonies of the United Kingdom. It has been attached to Canada since July 20, 1871, becoming the 6th province of the Confederation. If the economy is mainly based on forestry and mining, the film and tourism industries (with its 7 national parks) play an important role.
British Columbian society is one of the most British ten provinces of Canada, but it is also one of the most ethnically diverse, with 5.8% Aboriginal and 10.9% Chinese.
